The Jungle Effect: Healthiest Diets from Around the World--Why They Work and How to Make Them Work for You

It's a travelogue, a nutrition advice book (complete with case studies), and a cookbook, too. Writing in the first person, Daphne Miller brings these three books together into one fun read. She's adventurous and curious, which makes a book about preventing diabetes, cancer and depression into a delight. Who'd have thought!
Several ideas come together here: "Cold spots" are places in which chronic Western diseases are noticeably absent. Miller explores what and how people eat in the cold spots. Then she cites the research showing why a particular indigenous diet provides protection against a particular condition. She was led to the cold spots in her efforts to help individual patients who were struggling with health issues--and whose ethnic heritage is tied to the cold spot. That's another piece of the puzzle: in this fast-food world, it's not easy to maintain the ideal diet as usually presented: fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and varying advice on carbs. " But a Mexican "cold spot" diet might be easier for a Chicana patient to stick with. The foods might appeal to cultural memory, or even an individual's memories of grandmother's cooking. Sure enough, it turns out that way, as Miller returns from cold spots with traditional recipes to share with her patients. For example, a Scandinavian patient, who turns up her nose at ubiquitous California salads, turns out to love the Icelandic diet with plenty of berries, fish, and waxy potatoes. And eating the Icelandic way helps her out of a serious depression. Miller explains how it works.
The book invites us to eat our way around the world and learn the principles of each indigenous diet. We can sample from Camaroon, Crete, Okinawa and more. The recipes look good--I haven't tried them yet-- and are written to incorporate ingredients easily available in most US towns. Miller finds out about the recipes by peeking into kitchens and cooking with locals, who are colorfully portrayed. I found inspiration for healthy eating in this book, and learned a lot about the mechanisms behind the adage "we are what we eat."
I should tell you that Dr Miller is our family doctor. She's just as devoted to her patients as it seems in the book. And her constant scan of medical and nutrition research has helped our whole family. While I haven't made any of the recipes yet, I recognize changes we have already made based on her advice.

The Enlightened Kitchen: Fresh Vegetable Dishes from the Temples of Japan Review

The Enlightened Kitchen: Fresh Vegetable Dishes from the Temples of Japan
Average Reviews:

I am lucky enough to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, where "shojin" cuisine (Japanese Buddhist temple cuisine) is served to two wonderful restaurants: Cha Ya and Medicine. I often say "I could live on that cuisine," so when I discovered Fujii's cookbook, I was thrilled. The recipes are so simple but divinely delicious - and of course healthful! Many of the recipes call for only 5 or 7 ingredients, some of which may be unfamiliar at first. But, after your first visit to an Asian grocery or even the Asian aisle of your supermarket, you'll be ready to master this cuisine. As a vegan cooking instructor and a lover of this simple but elegant cuisine, I have prepared many of the dishes in this book and recommend each one as highly as the next. The simplicity is amazing, and the flavors are divine. You'll love this book!

A singularly interesting and valuable tool for any "greenie", this text is the ultimate for a spiritually-minded person. This is a difficult time for everyone in America, and even those with an adequate source of funds will find money saving tips galore, to reduce wanton expense and therefore have more to donate/give away/share. Start reading and then start DOING. It is easy with this book in your hands. Thanks Mrs. Sleeth.

Amazing Grains: Creating Vegetarian Main Dishes with Whole Grains Review

Amazing Grains: Creating Vegetarian Main Dishes with Whole Grains
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I may be biased because I took Joanne's School of Natural Cookery course ten years ago to date and came to know and love this fascinating woman's approach to ingredients and their interrelationships; nonetheless, I still think this book remains a a powerful and compelling learning tool. Amazing Grains opens with the idea of learning cooking as an open process and flexible framework rather than an exercise in rote memorization. Saltzman does not reject the accepted knowledge of traditional cooking, but works through an analysis of why some cooking 'traditions' taste good and what about their ingredients allow them to combine to make delicious dishes. She returns to the basic elements of taste and instructs the reader through theory and example in how to reconstruct flavor combinations to come about one's own dishes. Even more than this, Saltzman's theories work when applied to traditional cookbooks and can be used to analyze, add to, and improve their recipes. Yes, the examples in the book seem somewhat odd at first, but when you realize that the principles used to come about these unusual recipes actually generate successful dishes, you'll become excited about the possibilities! There is a somewhat macrobiotic/American vegetarian slant to this book, hence the frequent use of seaweeds, miso, mirin (Japanese sweetened cooking rice wine), and umeboshi vinegar; however, the art of the book is all about cross-cultural, cross-palate substitutions and how to utilize them wisely. You can find lists of recipes in any other vegetarian cookbook - what this book gives you is the knowledge and power to be your own list-maker!

From Seed to Skillet: A Guide to Growing, Tending, Harvesting, and Cooking Up Fresh, Healthy Food to Share with People You Love
Average Reviews:

I've been only organi-curious to date, but I have two sisters who garden, Christmas is looming, and I knew they couldn't already have this just-released book. So after a little research I ordered one "test" copy. (As of now, there's not a lot of info on the Amazon page, but googling the book title turned up a publisher's site with sample PDFs and a worthwhile youtube video.)
The book is written 1st-person from Jimmy Williams' point of view, and he's a one-off. His stories bring to life his really unique background, with his both Native American and African/Gullah near ancestry. But each unusual story is there to illustrate concrete tips and techniques - e.g., how his grandmother used her rolling-pin as a time-saving gardening tool - he still uses one the same way. The style is vivid and brisk, engaging and inspiring, especially in the more anecdotal early chapters. The whole book is accessible and confidence-building for a garden-inexperienced reader like me, and doesn't assume any knowledge, though the very detailed discussions of techniques and special adaptations for urban growing in the later chapters build on the basic skills colorfully introduced early on.
The middle chapters comprise a businesslike, highly practical, and comprehensive guide for getting started simply, growing from seeds (or seedlings), with, for example, alternative illustrated plans for creating beds in urban gardens; and moving on to wider subjects - how to prepare, water, and maintain the soil and garden through the seasons, and to expand it over time to include more variety, recommended plant pairings and rotation, etc. Williams shares a wealth of his own soil amendment recipes and cultivation techniques he developed himself or inherited, and provides book references and links to his favorite suppliers. I strongly suspect that the originality of his approaches and insights will be of interest to experienced gardeners, not only to beginners like me. Reading the book is like having a generous, enthusiastic, and highly experienced friend who is "opening the bag" to you on how he succeeds at what he loves.
The next-to-last chapter covers his "edible A-list" of vegetables to grow and eat, with a page or two on each, including his tutorial on getting the best results, and listing his favorite varieties. The final chapter will likely be many readers' favorite - an excellent mini-cookbook of twenty traditional southern recipes from Williams' multi-sided background, updated for the modern kitchen and garden.
Williams' very strong and agreeable personality carries throughout the book - his unique voice is strong even in the businesslike, practical sections - and the whole book comes across as personal. At the same time, the writing is elegantly fresh, economical, and readable - Heeger, the co-author, doesn't "speak," but in the strong flow and imagery of the prose, "From Seed to Skillet" is a wonderful literary collaboration. In his blurb on the cover, Michael Pollan picked exactly the right phrase in describing Williams and Heeger as a "fine coaching team."
Finally, the book itself is beautiful - large and very handsomely printed, and filled with photography that is well-chosen, illustrates key processes, and is inspiring and plain luscious to look through. After reading it, I ordered a copy for each sister for Christmas (problem solved), and kept the test copy for myself. Enthusiastically recommended!

Jimmy Williams learned all about vegetable gardening at the knee of his grandmother, a South Carolina native from a traditional Gullah community whose members were descendents of Caribbean slaves. He pays homage to his family history in this inspiring step-by-step guide to designing and planting a backyard vegetable garden and growing one's own food. With this essential garden manual, home gardeners can learn how easy it is to plan a garden, design and construct growing beds, tend the crop without using harmful chemicals, harvest gorgeous vegetables, and cook a delicious feast using Jimmy's favorite family recipes.

Super Cleanse is the best book I've ever read or used on cleansing. It is packed with truly delicious recipes for juices and cleansing foods that one can use to cleanse or to also easily incorporate into everyday living. The author makes the process fun and easy. I did the Urban Revitalizer cleanse after being overworked by ongoing business travel, depleted and hooked on coffee and sugar. It was completely amazing. I enjoyed the cleanse more than any other I have ever done because the recipes were delicious, nutritious and sustaining. I lost @ 7 pounds, got off a multiple latte a day habit and felt energized, serene and better than I had in a long time. After studying natural medicine, attending nutrition school and working at a popular vitamin company for the past 10 years, I have read many books on cleansing. This is truly the most useful, inspiring and health promoting cleansing book I have ever read. I highly recommend it for anyone that is interested in cleansing, great tasting healthy recipes or increasing their overall health!

Clean: The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body's Natural Ability to Heal Itself Review

Clean: The Revolutionary Program to Restore the Body's Natural Ability to Heal Itself
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I truly hope this post will help others like myself who would like to follow The Clean Program in it's entirety, but who does not have $450.00 for the "Rebuild Kit." I looked everywhere, but I wasn't really able to find a clear breakdown of what each of these supplements actually are and what a close match might be should I decide to purchase them individually. So, now that I have taken the time to do the research myself, and have broken down The Clean Program's Rebuild Kit, I would like to offer my determination to anyone else out there looking for this information. If you are interested in getting the supplements but don't have the finances for the kit like myself, you may want to consider the below listed supplements instead. In all, I would say I spent appx. $100-$150.00 which is a big jump from the $450.00 kit! Keep in mind, none of the supplements are required and many people have been very successful without purchasing any of the supplements at all!!! There are plenty of other reviews to support this statement. However, if you want to follow the program as closely as possible and elect to take the supplements, I have deciphered The Rebuild Kit and came up with a pretty accurate compromise to the kit's products listed individually as Nourish, Move, Clean 1, Clean 2, etc. I welcome any additions to my post or suggestions that anyone else may have that could be useful as well :-)
---- MILK THISTLE, vegetarian capsules- used for daily liver support and detox
---- DETOX SUPPORT, vegetarian capsules- supports the body's natural defenses against toxic substances we are exposed to in everyday life
---- DAILY FIBER, vegetarian capsules- provides gentle support for gastrointestinal health and natural friendly flora
---- MULTI-PROBIOTIC, vegetarian capsules- promotes healthy bowels and balanced digestion
---- DIGESTIVE ENZYMES, vegan- a digestive aid that breaks down proteins, fats, carbs, fiber, and milk sugar
---- A MULTI-VITAMIN, plant based/ vegetarian capsules or tablets- to ensure you re getting every important nutrient daily
---- BROWN RICE PROTEIN, vegan- vegetable protein (Try NutriBiotics Rice Protein)
---- NATURAL FIBER/ COLON CLEANSE POWDER, vegetarian- assists in cleansing the colon of accumulated build-up and helps prevent the formulation of new build-up (Try Dr. Natura Colonix Intestinal Fiber. All Colonix products are 100% vegetarian)
*******All products must be free of common food allergens: yeast, dairy, egg, gluten, corn, soy, wheat, and sugar*******
IF YOU CANNOT PURCHASE EVERYTHING, but still want to take some supplements, the most important to the program are the MILK THISTLE, NATURAL FIBER POWDER, and PROBIOTIC! So, if nothing else, just get those three and you will still be successful!
It is also suggested to drink 2 tablespoons of olive oil everynight before bed and eat a clove of garlic daily. I don't know about you, but I am not a person who can eat a clove of garlic by itself. A suggested alternative:
---- AGED GARLIC EXTRACT, vegetarian capsules
It is also note worthy to mention that Dr. Junger want's you to have a bowel movement everyday. If you do not, he wants you to get a colonic or castor oil and make it happen. You know your body and it's struggles. So, this may be something to consider in preparation as well.
*** If you go to THE CLEAN PROGRAM website, you can actually pull up the "Rebuild Kit" ingredients for yourself. This will allow you to confirm the main ingredients in the products before you purchase anything if you don't want to just take my word for it. Again, $450.00 was not an option to me but I want to follow the program as closely as possible. They also have a shopping list that you can get an idea of the groceries you will want to get in preparation of The Elimination Diet.
I REALLY HOPE THIS INFO PROVES USEFUL TO ATLEAST ONE PERSON! I PERSONALLY WOULD HAVE BEEN VERY APPRECIATIVE TO HAVE HAD THIS INFO AT HAND :-)

Bob's Red Mill Cookbook: Whole and Healthy Grains for Every Meal of the Day

I'm really liking this book. I always start my "whole grain cookbooks reviews" with a statement that I live about 5 minutes from the Bob's Red Mill headquarters and their amazing bulk section, so it doesn't come as a surprise that this book is on my bookshelf. I bought it alongside Bob's Red Mill Baking Book but this definitely gets more use.
It has a good combination of vegetarian/vegan and meat recipes. I recently decided to become "at-home" vegetarian (I know it's sort of tongue-in-a-cheek kind of deal but... I'm not buying and cooking with meat at home, but I still eat meat outside the house) and this book has been an awesome help with its inventive recipes. Lately, I've been focusing on the whole grain salads (Basmati Vegetable Salad with Fragrant Vinaigrette is spectacular) and soups (Kasha Purifying Soup is my favorite so far). I've tried multiple other recipes, and each turned out tasty.
I wasn't very succesful with the recipes from the "Sweets" section, though, but I've only tried 2 so far, so I'm not giving up on it just yet.

Creating a Forest Garden: Working with Nature to Grow Edible Crops
Average Reviews:

I just finished reading "Creating a Forest Garden" cover to cover. It's one of the best books on forest gardening I've come across and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in permaculture/edible landscaping. Martin's experiences with his forest garden are concisely presented to the reader and guide you to avoid many mistakes that are often made when starting out. The book not only guides you through the process of successfully laying out the garden, but gives many specifics, has pictures and information on many, many suitable plants and has many creative ideas born from working in the forest garden for so many years. If I were new to permaculture and forest gardening I'd start here. If you've read a lot in this area (like me) this book will become one of your best finds. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

Growing food sustainably is becoming more and more important in the light of our changing climate. Forest gardening is a way of working with nature that is not only productive and requires minimal maintenance, but also has great environmental benefits. A forest garden is a managed ecosystem modelled on the stucture of young natural woodland, with a diversity of crops grown in different vertical layers. Unlike in a conventional garden, nature does most of the work for you.
Creating a Forest Garden tells you everything you need to know - whether you want to plant a small area in your back garden or develop a larger plot. It includes advice on planning, design (using permaculture principles), planting and maintenance, and a comprehensive directory of over 450 trees, shrubs, herbaceous perennials, herbs, annuals, root crops and climbers - almost all of them edible and many very unusual.
As well as more conventional plants you can grow your own Nepalese raspberries, chokeberries, goji berries, almonds and hops-while creating a beautiful environment that benefits both you and the ecosystem. Forest gardens offer one solution for a long-term, sustainable way of growing food without compromising soil quality, food quality or biodiversity.

Blood tests before and after showed reduced inflamation, lower triglycerides, huge increase in red blood cells and infection fighting T-cells.I finally feel like I'm cooking in a healthy way. Dr. Couey has the science behind it and Robin's recipes and hints on buying and cooking healthy really help me transition to a lifestyle I think we can keep. A nice sidelight is that this helped my lifetime reflux and constipation.
I gave my first copy to a friend and referring my friends. Now I'm ordering another one.

Eat Well The YoChee Way: The Easy and Delicious Way to Cut Fat and Calories with Natural YoChee Review

Eat Well The YoChee Way: The Easy and Delicious Way to Cut Fat and Calories with Natural YoChee
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well organized with good menu selections, the Goldbecks make sure you know they want you to become a vegetarian. I have found the most useful recipes to be the appetizers and desserts, where coincidently, you can usually find the highest fat conventional items! Also, the OneEggLess recipe notes are splendid. The omlette is delicious and tastes even better with some pico de gallo or hot sauce!
The entrees, heavy on tofu and other soy protein, are somewhat repetitive, but they give lots of options for "making your own" recipes off of their bases. I'm sure they'd be appalled that I've converted some of their vegetarian/vegan recipes to include chicken, pork and lean beef, but yogurt cheese is as advertised, a very useful and healthy product. We eat a lot of tofu and miso already in our diets (we eat Asian style about 4 times a week) so I didn't feel the need to up my soy intake any further. I do make sure I use organic, non-GMO (genetically modified) soy products.
The Goldbergs also stress adding the veggies in their book, as well as in their other book, The Healthiest Diet in the World. They have a good point, and I really like their ideas.
I make yogurt cheese with a Donvier Deluxe Yogurt Cheese Maker rather that the strainer or funnel method. You can "set it and forget it" in the fridge overnight, and yes indeed, if you can use a spoon, you *can* make yogurt cheese.
I like using my own homemade yogurt, IMO it tastes worlds better than even organic store bought. I use a 1 quart Salton idiot-proof yogurt maker. I make it with organic 1% milk for a just a hint of fat for taste. Sometimes I "cut" the 1% with some Nonfat. I use the Yogourmet starter that I get at my natural foods store every third batch, using 1/2 c of made yogurt the other times.
We started using yogurt cheese in addition to adding flax to our diet to help reduce our cholesterol/saturated fat. We'll see how that works out. In the meantime, our food tastes great and we're packing in the nutrients, getting "creamy" yummy stuff, and all the while cutting fat. My kinda cookin' :D

My wife and I are very health conscious people and embraced Dr. Schwarzbein's program with great enthusiasm. We lost significant weight, felt good, had a lot of energy, and lost all cravings. However, our total cholesteral levels sky-rocketed!My wife's normal cholesterol level of less than 180 jumped up to 257 within three months. My cholesterol level which fluctuates from 180 to 205 went up to 249 within one month and shot up to 300 by the end of the third month.Consequently, we stopped eating whole eggs and nitrate and nitrite-free sausage for breakfast and cut back on our consumption of cheese. Within three weeks, my wife's cholesterol level had dropped back down to 216 and my cholesterol had plumetted back down to 206.I am discouraged that Dr. Schwarzbein has not addressed this possibility in her otherwise wonderfully written book. I have tried with no success to contact her to discuss this problem with her. Since I also am a health care provider with a doctorate from her alma mater, USC, and have also written several texts for my colleagues, I would very much liked to established dialogue with her. I believe her book is outstanding, but evidently some of us have a cholesterol sensitivity that is not discussed in her fine text.
