Lidia's Italy: 140 Simple and Delicious Recipes from the Ten Places in Italy Lidia Loves Most

Without a doubt, another fine labor of love and respect of Italian cooking from our Lidia. Knowing where to begin to describe this voluminous compilation of culinary joy is difficult, in that there is much to tell. Allow me to begin with its intention.
Lidia has covered 10 regions within the cultural offerings of her beloved Italy, and while she gives the reader a gastronomic tour, her lovely daughter, Tanya, gives the historical tour, which was an excellent melting of the two grand reasons to appreciate this culture. To be sure, Tanya has a Ph.D of Renaissance history from Oxford University, and you come away with a deeper appreciation of Italy and the recipes that her mother has offered.
This rather heavy book has superb photography of prepared dishes, ingredients in the raw, spectacular views of the Italian countryside, as well as some of the charming people that she has known along the way, and along the years. Perhaps this is something of a "family" album, if you will.
The regions covered are Istria, Trieste, Friuli, Padova and Treviso, Piemonte, Maremma, Rome, Naples, Sicily, and Puglia. In beginning each regional chapter, Lidia begins with a listing of the recipes contained within, then gives her own little introduction to the territory. As she presents each recipe, she gives another small introduction that will either give a sort of educational mention, or perhaps a cooking hint. At the end of the chapter, Tanya brings it to a close with "Tanya's Tour" in which she breaks down the region with specific areas of interest and notables, and gives the reader an incredible short education of history and information.
There are 140 recipes within this tome, and they are covered within the seven categories of:
APPETIZERS
SOUPS
SALADS, SIDE DISHES, and CONDIMENTS
PASTAS AND RISOTTOS
FISH AND SEAFOOD
MEAT and POULTRY
DESSERTS
It would be a much longer review if I mentioned each specific recipe, but I believe it would suffice to say that, knowing Lidia and her passion for the true art of culinary creations, they would all be delicious. Besides, I am sure that you could find someone for each dish who would be most grateful for your labor of love, courtesy of Lidia. Having purchased all of her books, I have been most pleased to serve so many of her dishes to very happy guests, and never have I been disappointed. Lidia herself has degrees in food chemistry and such, so her fountain of knowledge is backed with science as well as love of this artform.
And to add a final note, a listing of the dishes made on her new PBS series, "Lidia's Italy", is presented at the end of the book, listing the recipes made on each show and from which region they come. You are also given her sources for some of the fine foods she uses, which include stores and websites.
As our grand dame of Italian culinary creations always tell us, "tutti a tavola per mangiare". Ciao!

100 Best Gluten-Free Recipes (100 Best Recipes) Review

100 Best Gluten-Free Recipes (100 Best Recipes)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you cook gluten-free from scratch, it's smart to commit to a few recipe sources, because every source has its own flour blend, and it can make you crazy having to pay for, make, store, and use up, all those blends. I've tried them all, and I threw my lot in with Carol a long time ago for these reasons:
1) She pays attention to good nutrition (higher protein, lower fat, and higher fiber, without sacrificing texture, taste or appearance).
2) Her recipes are honest, sensible and reliable.
3) Everyone, GF or not, likes what I make.
4) Carol's very good at spotting trends and including the best ones in her books (who wants to be left out of yummy things like Crispy Goat Cheese Rounds?).
Mixing up her sorghum flour blend will take you back to your pre-GF days: the feel, appearance and scent are wonderful.
100 BEST GF RECIPES is compact, up-to-date, beautiful, and surefire. And, no matter how long you have been cooking and baking GF, you will always learn something new and useful reading Carol's Introductions; they're like a GF primer and refresher course in one.
I have recommended this book to the newly diagnosed, to veterans, and to those non-GF heroes who want to cook GF for their friends or family members. It's fairly priced and you won't regret it.

I bought this book and The New Marine Aquarium: Step-By-Step Setup & Stocking Guide by Michael S. Paletta in order to plan my new saltwater aquarium. The Paletta book is fantastic, up to date and is everything a beginner could want. The dummies book still pushes the undergravel filter as the best method for filtration. About a dozen websites that I checked dissagree. That's my major problem with this book. Having read both books over the course of two nights, I was astounded by how little information you actually get from this book. No subject is given in enough detail, even for a beginner's book. You will see my copy on ebay soon.

Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies Review

Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone considering weight loss surgery. It will become a valuable tool in helping you make your decision. Should you decide to have WLS, it will guide you through the numerous tests and insurance hurdles, the hospital stay, potential complications, post-op diet, and post-op emotions.
I read this book three times on my journey towards WLS. I'm now a couple of weeks post-op and continue consulting it several times a week.
One of the authors is the surgeon that Al Roker selected for his weight-loss surgery (before she had written this book). Roker wrote a short intro to the book that explains how he extensively researched WLS and interviewed eight surgeons before selecting Dr. Kurian. Roker has the money to go to any surgeon in the world, and the fact that he chose Dr. Kurian among the eight that he interviewed emphasizes Kurian's expertise in the field.
What impressed me most about this book was that the authors provided reliable and exhaustive information but didn't try to "sell" the readers on having this surgery.
Unlike most other WLS books, this one covers not only the standard Roux-en-Y and its variations but also other procedures increasingly being considered by patients, such as Lap-Band and bibliopancreatic diversion. Less common procedures are also described. After a description of each procedure, the authors provide a list of pros and cons to that procedure.
Every step of the journey towards WLS is explained in detail here, including the numerous tests the surgeon will require, getting insurance approval, the hospital stay, the post-op diet, potential complications, and psychological factors. It is truly exhaustive.

i really wanted to love this book. the pictures of the dishes throughout the book are amazing. this book does have some great info on yogic diet and fasting, but as i made a number of the dishes in this book i wondered if they really tested them out. the directions sometimes seem to leave out steps and/or ingredients, which makes it hard to follow. maybe i've just been unlucky with the recipes i've chosen over the last 6 months, but the what i've made from this book has not turned out (and i'm not a novice cook). it really is too bad that the recipes don't live up to the picture that go along with them.

After my husband had emergency heart bypass surgery and we were suddenly plunged into a low-fat lifestyle, I looked at almost every low-fat cookbook in print. This one is my favorite. There are full-page color photos and a complete nutritional analysis for each recipe. The recipes are easy and taste good, and don't use weird ingredients like pureed prunes or carob powder. The Lemon Meringue Cake with Strawberries was a big hit - I plan to try out the Chocolate Swirl Cheesecake, too. Overall, a very easy introduction to a different way of life.

I have been dabbling here and there with a rawfood lifestyle and I bought a stack of books to get me started. By far this book is the easiest to follow, most colorful, and they have great recipes that have turned out exactly as explained. I made a great recipe out of this book which I took to two potlucks (raw and a normal meat eater) and a lot of people raved about it. From appetizers to salads, burgers, breads, meals, and desserts this is a great source. Also, one final yet critical thing I like that the authors do is tell you exactly how long and the necessary temperature to have things in the dehydrator which is a common mistake I have discovered many people make in books and on youtube - they leave it out. All in all, this book is an absolute MUST HAVE for a new raw foodie or a seasoned raw foodist. Enjoy.

Prayfit: Your Guide to A Healthy Body and A Stronger Faith in 28 Days Review

Prayfit: Your Guide to A Healthy Body and A Stronger Faith in 28 Days
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I didn't really know what to expect with the PrayFit book, but what I found was a book tailor made for those who REALLY want to grow in their faith, develop a deeper understanding of nutrition and get fit by beginning or continuing a body-weight-only exercise program. As with any exercise book or program, it's only as good as how much work you put into it, but there are no gimmicks here, these concepts are tried and true and only require commitment on our part to see results.
Each day contains seven components, Faith (the daily reading and devotion), Pastors Point (which are personal reflection questions based on the devotion), Today's Prayer, Walking with Him (a spiritual exercise for the day), the Workout, Firm Believer (a fitness tip) and Food Byte (nutritional info). There are also recipes thrown in once a week. In the back of the book you'll find a breakdown of the exercises, menu options, a sample menu week, PrayFit nutrition basics and a few essays. The book actually contains two 28 day programs.
Starting with the "Faith" portion, I was pleasantly surprised to see how much emphasis was placed on the spiritual side. I somewhat expected the book to be mostly about fitness with a little 'faith' thrown in for good measure, after all, it's written by an Exercise Physiologist. But there is equal attention given to one's spiritual health. I particularly liked the follow-up questions (Pastor's Point), because as someone who enjoys fitness I can easily 'read' the devotional just to get it done to get to the 'important part.' The Pastor's Point forced me to slow down and really reflect on what I had just read. And what I found is, the questions will do me a load of good if I force myself to answer them, not just read them and move on. I know, earth shattering stuff, but again, what we get out of it is solely determined by what we're willing to put into it.
The "Fitness" portion of each day, at first seems overly simplistic, that is until you actually DO the work! I love that they're body weight exercises, no fancy, expensive equipment to buy and also no excuses, everyone has a body. Rest days are included. I love the idea of making your maximum from yesterday your minimum today. In other words, constant progression. In the introduction, Jimmy says "The body will only change to the level it is stressed... If you keep challenging yourself, your body will keep getting stronger, fitter, leaner, faster." Sounds good to me! I definitely think this program is good for someone just starting out or something that someone can add to their 'regular' fitness routine.
I didn't get the feeling while reading this book that the author was withholding info to save for another release, this book is chock-full of helpful stuff, I felt like I had everything I needed to get in shape both physically and spiritually, from the "bytes" of nutritional info to the daily fitness tips via the "Firm Believer" segments.
My only two complaints are that Jimmy Pena's devotions seemed to be on average, shorter than Jimmy Page's and I would've liked him to have expanded on his thoughts a bit more, he has a lot of good stuff to say. The other thing is, it's mentioned in the introduction that there is Journal Space included with each day and I really didn't find it. There was blank space at the end of MOST days but I guess I was looking for a spot that said "Journal" or "Notes" because like I said, the "blank space" was hit and miss. Nothing major, just things I noticed.
The reader is encouraged to go to Prayfit.com to start a workout journal and that's an excellent idea since accountability is so important to success. I love that an email is provided if one has additional questions, info@prayfit.com, that made me feel like I had support and I also love that they're on Facebook and Youtube because apparently I was doing the lunge wrong!
Final thought: In the essay at the back of the book Jimmy talks about "back in the day" when kids used to go out side and play for hours, I was one of those kids. After school we were ordered outside to play and didn't come in till it was time for dinner. And sometimes we went back out to play till it was bedtime. That doesn't happen anymore, as a nation, we've stopped playing (exercising) and insist on being entertained (for hours) and we are paying the price for it. I don't have children, but this definitely has me thinking about my nieces and nephews and how I can model for them the importance of staying active and living a healthy life.
Update: Having finished the 28 day program I can definitely say that it builds strength in one's physical and spiritual life. Wow, what a workout! I've been working out pretty consistently for some time but this was an awesome challenge for me. The whole PrayFit model of progressive workouts is amazing, trying to beat your own times and reps each day sets you on a fast track to building strength. It also shined a monster spotlight on my weak areas, which I am tackling now (post '28 days').
The spiritual component has helped me build a habit of daily reading the Bible and a devotion and I feel like something is off if I don't 'get it in' as part of my day, and that was a very weak area of my life.
The 28 days was challenging, sticking to it and not giving up really tested me but I'm so glad I finished. It showed me so much about who I am and what I need to be working on both physically and spiritually.
I can not recommend this book enough.

From the exercise physiologist of Tyler Perry and Mario Lopez comes PrayFit, a whole person fitness system designed to strengthen body and deepen faith. At its core, PrayFit is about effort: giving your best in two areas that are vital to well-being—faith and fitness. The underlying approach is simple: Make a daily appointment to spend quality time with the Lord and to exercise. This 28-day plan guides readers of any fitness level to begin a workout routine that can be done at home with little to no equipment, to make small but effective changes in their diet and to grow in biblical knowledge and spiritual strength. As they follow the specially designed meal plans and workouts, readers will see the physical results of their efforts almost immediately—and as they reflect on the daily devotional reading (contributions from Pastor Jimmy Page, VP of Field Ministry and National Director of Wellness for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and Scripture verses, they will begin to understand the eternal dimension of giving their best. Living God's promised abundant life isn't only about faith . . . though that's where it starts. PrayFit is the best way to claim that promise both inside and out.

More Soy Cooking: Healthful Renditions of Classic Traditional Meals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In her new book, More Soy Cooking, Marie Oser gives standard meals a healthy makeover by substituting soy derivatives for meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy products. Traditional Chili Con Carne becomes Chili NON Carne, without sacrificing taste, texture, or nutritional value. "Swiss 'Steak' with Sauteed Portobello and Cremini Mushrooms," 'Beef' Ravioli, "'Turkey' Tetrazzini," and "Manicotti 'Bolognese'," are just a few of the mouth-watering, easy-to-make "enlightened" entrees (based on Ms. Oser's weekly syndicated newspaper column, "The Enlightened Kitchen"). Each recipe is followed by a nutritional analysis of both the traditional version, and the "enlightened" version. The Chocolate Chip Bundt Cake with Orange Blossom Glaze weighs in with only 4 grams of fat, compared to 16 grams for its traditional counterpart. Recipes include appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, pasta and pizza, side dishes, and desserts. Sixteen pages are devoted to "The Need for a Plant-Based Diet," in which Ms. Oser addresses the protein question, and debunks the dairy myth. Twenty pages are devoted to the definition of terms used in soy-centered cuisine. Although wine is required in some recipes, other liquids, such as broth or apple cider, may be substituted. There is a four-page resource guide to provide the reader with websites and/or phone numbers of product manufacturers. More Soy Cooking is a MUST HAVE for health-conscious cooks who want to maintain the authentic flavor of their families favorite recipes.

Strong Women Stay Slim Review

As a nearly life-long dieter and minimal exerciser, I can't tell you how impressed I am with the results I've got from using this book, compared with others I've tried. I'd followed Strong Women Stay Young (which I also highly recommend for us 50-plussers) for about 10 weeks, so maybe that gave me a head start, at least in terms of getting me into a consistent exercising regime, but the food plan in SWSS is what really got me losing weight & trimming down in size. I've lost 3 kg/6.6 pounds, gone from tight slacks/jeans in Australian size 14 (U.S. 16, I think), to where my Aussie size 12s are too big - in about 10-12 weeks. I'm rarely hungry and have stopped craving or being satisfied with junk food. The book is enjoyable to read, the authors' credentials seem impeccable, and the food plan is nutritionally sound and so wonderfully flexible that even to say I'm on a diet feels somehow dishonest. With its "no-fad," "no frills" approach, SWSS has made me really believe I'll never be fat/flabby/weak again. I reckon Dr Nelson & colleagues have given me the tools to stay slim/toned/strong for a long time to come.

Cooking Light Way to Cook: The Complete Visual Guide to Everyday Cooking Review

Cooking Light Way to Cook: The Complete Visual Guide to Everyday Cooking
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
UPDATE 12/2/09: Someone commented that his copy of Way to Cook had glossy paper --- I visited a local bookstore this evening, and it seems my copy must be from an earlier batch or a different printer, because the pages were indeed glossy. Just wanted to clear that up with everyone and also mention that I didn't order my copy from Amazon. I bought it at Borders about a week after it was released, so feel free to take your chances glossy-page-wise.
REVIEW:
I'm a big fan of Cooking Light and have several of their compendiums and a few years worth of their magazines, so was quite excited to pick this up a few days ago. Basically, this book is like a collection of the occasional "how to" pages in the Cooking Light cookbooks. Overall, it's a useful book for the beginning-intermediate cook, with helpful colorful, illustrations on how to make a souffle, make Asian dumplings, and cut a mango. As this is a reference book, rather than a recipe collection, there aren't as many recipes as other Cooking Light cookbooks, but the ones provided are thoughtful and classic, with a few surprises that I haven't seen before in other collections (like char siu bao - Chinese BBQ pork buns).
A couple gripes: the book is a thick hardback, but the pages look like the newspaper type - a little grainy and cardboardish. Maybe I'm a too picky about these finer points, but I prefer my cookbooks to have glossy pages, especially since this is a visual aid you're likely to have it propped up while you're cooking. I'm a bit accident-prone, so it'd be nice if the pages were a little more substantial in case I should spill something...
Also, I wish that the layout of the cookbook were a little more intuitive. From the table of contents, which is organized by cooking method, it's not always clear where I'll find the way to cut an avocado, or how to debone a chicken. I think separating sections by food groups might have been more helpful.

The Complete Book of Chinese Health & Healing: Guarding the Three Treasures Review

The Complete Book of Chinese Health and Healing: Guarding the Three Treasures
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are thousands of books published about Chinese Medicine, but none come close to this one for readability, enjoyment, clarity, and detail. While I don't agree with every single interpretation that Reid makes, I find that I am constantly referring my patients and students to this book.
It is a great place to begin your exploration of Chinese Medicine in its broadest scope. Reid writes intelligently, and yet simply, about the full range of Chinese Medical practices and the foundations of Energetic Medicine too.
His format takes the reader, step-by-step, along the path of understanding this rich tradition of self-care, personal evolution, and natural healing. You will find plenty of personal stories in this book and a fair share of scientific findings which support the understanding presented.
Perhaps most importantly, you will be able to apply the basic principles, as described so clearly here, in your daily life. This is truly a book that can help you get started on the path of natural healing in your own life.
If you are in the healing profession, you will discover a world of refreshing insights, challenging questions, and beneficial protocols to explore.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is sincerely interested in Chinese Medicine or Qigong.

Martin Yan...funny guy, and king of PBS cooking shows, is a definite draw for getting this book. Who better to write and explain what is one of the world's most complex and rich cuisines for those of us who have never even touched a wok?
This book helps shatter the image that Asian/Oriental cuisine is one huge homogenous mass of countries wound together. For people first learning about Chinese cooking, and the food culture, this book helps to get you into the sea and your feet wet. As mentioned before, the advanced chef would likely find this repetitive. There is lots of useful, practical advice as well. The sections on shopping in Chinese or Asian grocery stores is helpful, as is the history lesson in the beginning.
One of the things which I loved, was that for his common ingredients list, he said how long things will last in your home under storage. Since some of them to the every-day American cook border upon the mystical and arcane and likely won't be used up quickly, this is invaluable for the person wishing to experiment once a week or less infrequently and doesn't want to waste money on food and spices that won't be used.
This is to say, nothing of Martin Yan's personality, which was also mentioned before, is great! He makes the book worth reading even if you're never going to cook. with it. Out of his 20+ cookbooks, this is one I'm glad I picked up first.

The Best of Everything After 50: The Experts' Guide to Style, Sex, Health, Money, and More Review

The Best of Everything After 50: The Experts' Guide to Style, Sex, Health, Money, and More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If nothing else, this book deserves an extra star for its smug, self-righteous, know-it-all tone because it is so obvious that the author is not aware that she is being in any way overbearing. Just like Charles Schultz's iconic Lucy, this author knows absolutely what is best for everybody else, and is even willing to set up a cardboard stand to dispense "Psychiatric Advice for 5 cents" in order to make life for the lesser human beings just a little better. Oh, and just so you don't read any further if you happen to be of the male persuasion -- despite the title, this book is for women.
A former magazine publisher, the author, Barbara Hannah Grufferman, awoke one morning to find that she was ("Oh dear, when did that happen?") reaching the mid-century mark. So she decided to call in favors from all the beautiful and intelligent people she has met during her career, and she has produced this cursory handbook to hitting fifty. Of course, the book works best if, as the author makes EXTREMELY CLEAR ABOUT HERSELF, you are rich, skinny, had your children late in life, are in a wonderful marriage, healthy, think running is the ONLY way to exercise, live in or near a city with large full-service department stores, and (I'm not making this up) have naturally curly hair.
For the most part, the book, which is set in large double-spaced type, and has no drawings or photos, reads like a series of magazine articles which you have already perused a dozen times over the last twenty years. For instance: Establish a relationship with a Primary Care Physician (if you have insurance, of course, which she doesn't mention); Don't smoke; Use sunblock; Be skinny: Exercise (read: Run, preferably marathons); Eat right; Follow a skin regimen; and, For goodness sake, don't spend more than ten minutes every day putting on make-up. (News flash: Although I do exceed the time limit on this little piece of advice, I would like to point out that Adrienne Arpel has been using this ten-minute make-up advice since 1974.)
The author likes personal shoppers, and recommends that you establish a relationship with one so that you can wear the best clothes at the best prices. She spends $2000 at Saks Fifth Avenue, (and then bows to the masses and spends $350 at Target,) to show that "anyone" can own the basics of a wardrobe for a reasonable price. Her basics consist of lots of tank tops, which I have declined to wear, except on the beach, since I graduated from law school, and knee-length pencil skirts. She also insists that we all throw out our "granny panties" and buy a certain brand of thong which she swears by. I don't know about you, but I tried that thong and it's just as uncomfortable as every other thong I've ever had on.
But her most unusual advice is her chapter on hair. She likes long hair. She insists that she doesn't, but believe me, this chapter is all about her maintaining her long naturally curly blonde hair. She no longer "scrunches it" or "blows it straight." She air-dries it. She has found a colorist who will work with the grays to "blend them in" so that she doesn't actually color her hair --- she just works with what she has. She has very definite hair rules: 1. Shampoo only once or twice a week. On the other days use only conditioner and water. 2. Use your fingers to sculpt your hair, not a brush or comb. 3. Never use a blow dryer or curling iron (of course since you have naturally curly hair, you don't need a curling iron). If you absolutely HAVE to be at the White House or the United Nations in an hour, use a diffuser or a blower dryer with no heat. 4. Every 8 to 10 weeks, get highlights to blend in that gray, and (here's the one I love) 5. Every five to eight MONTHS, get a hair cut. C'mon, Barbara -- those of us with short hair have to get a haircut every four to six weeks to maintain its shape. But it's not about us, is it?
If you are a member of the jet-setting beautiful people, you might find this book of some use, although surely even you have heard all of this before. If you are an ordinary person -- a wife, a mother, someone with a job who has to grocery shop occasionally and doesn't want to go around with sopping wet hair all the time -- pick up "Marie Claire" or "Vogue" at the beauty shop for a quick read while your roots are processing, and forget about this weirdo's wacky cartoon universe. LUCY LIVES!
