The Harrowsmith Salad Garden: A Complete Guide to Growing and Dressing Fresh Vegetables and Greens
Average Reviews:

I ordered this book on a whim, from a recommendation in another book on gardening - it is one of the best books on salad gardening and cooking - if not the best. The photographs alone are worth the price of the book; they are beautiful - and inspirational. There is a wealth of detailed information on almost any ingredient you would ever think of tossing in the salad bowl (as well as some you hadn't thought of until reading this book). Even though this book is based on a garden in Canada, it is still very relevant to anyone who is interested in growing for salads. There are many mouth-watering recipes, as well as excellent resources and suggested varieties of seeds. I followed some of the book's recommendations and was extremely pleased with the varieties I grew; they were declicious. I can't recommend this book too highly; you will definitely get your money's worth!

Charlie Trotter's Vegetables Review

Charlie Trotter's Vegetables
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have had this book for past two years and have tried a lot of the recipes. As a vegetarian, I have always had a hard time to find a book that has recipes that very tasty (I am not a big fan of meat substitute), simple, and beautiful. His books provides them all. His soups are pathetically easy...cook, blend, strain, and serve. He does spend sometime in decoration but these are usually not neccessary (I only ocassionally do that, eliminating them will not impact the overall taste). Unlike other readers, I have not had a hard time finding ingredients but then again, I live in Chicago and shop at numerous places for groceries. Although, Whole foods and Treasure Island (chicago area only) carries every single ingredient he calls for (some obviously are seasonal). It is an excellent book for people who love to cook seasonal vegetables (he breaks his recipes by months).
His dishes are laid out for course meals so the portions are small. I eat very small portions so if I cook the soup (the entire recipe, suggested serving is four) with some bread on side, it is enough for my friend and I.
I disagree with anyone who says that the recipes are hard to use. The time consuming part is roasting, baking, or cooling time (which does not require you spend the entire time in the kitchen, I generally spend that time to go do something else). I usually don't have the flavored oils that he calls for but I just substitute with one of the oils I have or just really good olive oil. I think if you have the time than go for the entire recipe but skipping the oils, or very small amount of sauce is not going to hurt the taste of the dish.
If you are intimidated by his book, I suggest your start with his soup recipe (for example, his Tomato soup recipe calls for taxi tomato...if you don't find taxi tomato, use big yellow tomato or even good quality red tomato).

Kristen Suzanne's EASY Raw Vegan Dehydrating: Delicious and Easy Raw Food Recipes for Dehydrating Fruits, Vegetables, Nuts, Seeds, Pancakes, Crackers, Breads, Granola, Bars and Wraps
Average Reviews:

I bought two books in Kristen Suzanne's series and while the recipes look good, I have to agree with other reviewers who've pointed out how repetitive the series format is for these books. Almost the entire first half of each book is an introductory guide to the raw vegan lifestyle. Had these books been offered at half the price they are, this might have seemed an appropriate format for a series like this. But each one of these books is nearly as costly as other, more thorough books on preparing raw vegan food. Certainly once you've spent the money to buy a few of the books in this series, you should have something that amounts to more than an intro and the last few pages of each.

...and if this is as good as that one (circa 1975) then it gets 5 stars. I (like the author) too had been failing miserably in gardening - until I read his book. Unlike many other books on the subject of bio-intensive gardening, this one was encouraging and made it sound so easy. It ended up being very easy and very rewarding. Now I tell everyone - double dig, amend heavily, plant close together. Get this book!

A postage stamp garden is a small area that can produce a bounty of herbs and vegetables. Many gardeners complain that they are short on both time and garden space. The Postage Stamp Garden Book solves both of these problems. The instructions in this book clearly demonstrate how anyone can produce tremendous amounts of vegetables in small spaces (using containers as well as ground gardens) by following intensive, ecologically friendly techniques that require much less weeding, watering, and overall effort.

I was introduced to this book by a deciple of Ann Wigmore, who was teaching a class in living foods. After a short time on the diet I was able to stop taking my hypo-thyrodism medication forever. The book is recommended as a great starter in uncooked foods, as it is inexpensive and gives the theory behind the recipes. Chapter titles: 1) AN APPLE A DAY OR HAVE IT YOUR WAY, 2) LET FOOD BE YOUR MEDICINE, 3) THE SECRET OF HEALTH, 4) KEEPING YOUR BODY CLEAN, 5) THE HIPPOCRATES DIET, 6) INDOOR GARDENING FOR BEGINNERS, 7) SUPER NUTRITION FROM SPROUTS, 8) WHEATGRASS MIRACLES, 9) APPLES AND ORANGES AREN'T THE SAME, 10) HIPPOCRATES DIET RECIPES, 11)THE HIPPOCRATES DIET AND WEIGHT LOSS.

A healthy and happy guide for everyone wanting to live a life where the body conducts life force without restriction and allows the planet to rejuvinate at the same time. I feel revitalized with this wisdom.

Green Gorilla contains Adi Da's summary instruction on the searchless raw diet. It includes detailed recommendations relative to blended green drinks and how to live healthfully on a raw diet. In this book you will also find a collection of remarkable communications given by Adi Da on what is truly lawful dietary practice. He explains how such right-life practice supports spiritual sensitivity, establishes health and well-being, and positively influences the well-being of all humankind, the non-humans, and the earth as a whole. Part three of the book, compiled by the Radiant Life Clinic, is full of practical guidance on the dietary disciplines It includes links to websites and other resources, based on Adi Da's instruction. In the section called 'Living the Searchless Raw Diet' you will find chapters on the phases of the health process, intelligent dietary transitions, foods to eat and not to eat, how to prepare blended drinks, sample meal plans, a guide to fasting, how to do an enema and a liver flush, and much more. This book also includes the new version of the essay, The Secrets of How To Change.
Adapted from the Introduction by Daniel Bouwmeester, MD: "Adi Da's fundamental recommendation relative to diet is the searchless raw (fructo vegetarian) diet. Searchless in the sense that it is simply lawful management of a body in communion with the living reality free of the need to use food as a means to solve any kind of problem or seek any kind of ideal in body or mind. The Green Gorilla is the essential, summary communication of the divine adept, Avatar Adi Da Samraj to his devotees and to all relative to diet." For those who are interested in a lawful, healthy life, there is great wisdom here to guide you, free of any kind of exaggerated seeking approach. Listen carefully to Adi Da's precise words of instruction. Conform to his help. Allow diet to be the benign simplicity that it rightfully is and let it serve the body's submission to what is prior and beyond.

Designing the New Kitchen Garden: An American Potager Handbook Review

Designing the New Kitchen Garden: An American Potager Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The sub-title for this book might be "A landscape designer dabbles prettily in vegetables" The book is beautifully produced, although I found the strong raking light in some of the photographs actually obscured the plants.
The chapter of historical background is almost worth the price of admission itself (if you're interested in history and the history of gardening) Although somewhat preciously phrased, the author does remind us of the connection of spirit, body, and garden, something we may forget when we in the middle of a vicious battle with cabbage loopers.
But the excursions into real gardens felt to me like a fantasy. If these gardens are meant to be inspiring, they failed with me. Every page I turned reminded me that these gardens are big, and clearly cost a lot of money to build and maintain. I never had a clear sense of the good eating that should be coming out of these gardens. And of course, nothing ever seems to go wrong in these gardens; there is no sense of how the gardeners have learned and evolved their gardens over time.
For a book ostensibly about "American" potager gardening, most of the country was omitted. Including midwest, southern, and western garden would have been a big help.
The design chapter starts off on the wrong foot by discussing a potager garden that was never built. Even worse, it was never built in a large urban space with which few of us will ever have to contend, so I fail to see the point. The second garden design discussed, designed for a small restaurant, also has not been built. The third garden is the author's own, now giving me the uncomfortable feeling that the entire book is a vanity project.
When the winter weather keeps you indoors, this will not a bad book to page through; just don't let it be the only book on your shelf about potager gardening.

Keeping Food Fresh: Old World Techniques & Recipes Review

Keeping Food Fresh: Old World Techniques and Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Keeping Food Fresh" is a compilation of recipes for preserving food contributed by readers of a French gardening magazine. It was originally published in French and has been translated to English with care. Recipes for frozen or canned products were omitted to allow a focus on older, more traditional methods.
The material presented is perhaps best used by the American reader as a point of reference when evaluating other recipes. It also could serve as the starting point for experimentation. It is not a cookbook in that the recipes come from many sources and do not appear to have been checked in a test kitchen. Some of the quantities betray their metric roots, since few recipes in this country would call for 11 pounds of an ingredient.
Some recipes clearly do not meet USDA safety guidelines, as is pointed out in the editorial comments.
Those who appreciate Eliot Coleman's writing should realize that his writing in this book is limited to the introductory material.
Overall, I found the book to be an interesting read, with much unique knowledge not available elsewhere. It approaches "primary source" material in that the traditional family recipes have undergone little editing, thus their historical fabric is more effectively captured.

I am always looking for healthy but delicious recipes. I have a lot of cookbooks but I find myself turning to this cook book more and more for recipes and inspiration. I have found few cook books that include as many fruits and vegetables into the recipes as The Healthy Palate. The recipes are not only delicious but also easy to make - important for a working mother of two. The cherry glazed chicken and scallops with cabbage are delicious. The curry sauce from the broccoli with curry sauce is super tasty. The carrot salad is perfect if you are looking for a crunchy, tangy summer salad. Even the desserts are delicious. The ricotta cake with berries is amazing. Kids (and adults) will love the oatmeal, carrot and raisin cookies. Highly recommended!

The Edible French Garden (Edible Garden Series, Vol. 3)

I bought this book for my husband because of the beautiful photos of preciously landscaped French vegetable gardens. But he says this is the most useful garden book we have, with more good, helpful information on the types of vegetables we grow (squash, eggplant, lettuces, etc.) than any other.
Now that I've read it myself, I can see the author offers good advice on growing most types of vegetables, from soil preparation to pest control. I'd highly recommend this book for home vegetable gardeners (even if you don't surround your vegetable beds with clipped boxwood hedges.)

I am quite impressed with this book. The amount of information that Duke has crammed into this slim volume is unbelievable. The herb profiles contain everything you would want to know about an herb before using it. The safety rating is such a great tool. I wonder why Duke is the first herbalist to think of it (at least I think he's the first. Never seen it in any other herbal). In this collection of herbs, there are North, South and Central American plants as well as European and Asian ones. There's a nice therapeutic index too, listing what herbs are good for which conditions. Duke has a great writing style. It reflects his incredible knowledge, sense of humor and just plain common sense. Excellent book! If I could only have 3 herb books, this would be one of them.

Edible Wild Plants: A North American Field Guide

This Outdoor Life Book, while it follows the typical field guide format with nice glossy pages and clear, crisp color identification photos with full plant descriptions, is jam-packed with not only the picture, plant name, habitat, and identification details but goes in-depth to clearly define those PARTS of the plant that are edible and how to prepare them (sometimes even including simple recipes). This guide is the most detailed edible plant guide I have found and offers great "extras" like a quick key guide that allows you to identify if a plant is trail nibble, salad addition, cooked green, underground vegetable, fritter, raw fruit, cooked fruit, jams/jellies/sauces, syrup/sugar, candy, grain, nuts/seeds, flour/meal, hot beverage, cold beverage, pickle, seasoning, or thickener. The "Poisonous look-alikes" feature is an added attraction within each plant description and there is also an entire poisonous plant section so there will be no mistake that what you have found Mother Nature meant you to harvest. A fabulous handbook for gardeners, hikers, and cooks.
