Fine Filipino Food Review

Fine Filipino Food
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an interesting introduction to Filipino cooking, although I have not tried out any of the recipes yet. There is some discussion of the historical development of Filipino food -- as I am pretty much completely unfamiliar with Filipino culture and food, I cannot opine on its accuracy, but I have a general sense that there is more information out there.
For those that have an interest in unfamiliar cuisines, this is a worthwhile read. The absence of pictures in a cookbook is a real handicap, though. It is a tremendous help to know what a dish should look like and taste like when it is done. For more familiar cuisines that's not as big a problem -- for totally unfamiliar dishes, it is.

Early Sprouts: Cultivating Healthy Food Choices in Young Children Review

Early Sprouts: Cultivating Healthy Food Choices in Young Children
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Childhood obesity has risen to the top of the agenda of many health experts, and so "Early Sprouts: Cultivating Healthy Food Choices in Young Children," has arrived to offer great yet practical ideas on how to tackle the problem.
The idea of the 24-week classroom program is to integrate solid nutritional principles into early childhood curriculum through lesson plans and activities, instead of simply lecturing children about why they should eat their vegetables. Lessons include literally planting sprouts, visiting farms, gardens and farmers' markets, using vegetable terms in such exercises as math and vocabulary and working in a garden. Bringing fresh food from soil to table is the underlying lesson.
Included in the book are several recipes, most of them class-sized but certainly adaptable; tools for assessing what parents are feeding their children; a vitamin and mineral chart, and ways to establish and expand support for this kind of program. The book notes that the program exists in Northeast schools and suggests some of its ideas might have to be adapted for different cultural and geographical regions.

The 30-Minute Vegan's Taste of the East: 150 Asian-Inspired Recipes--from Soba Noodles to Summer Rolls Review

The 30-Minute Vegan's Taste of the East: 150 Asian-Inspired Recipes--from Soba Noodles to Summer Rolls
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As soon as I heard about this book, I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy. After all, what foodie (vegan or otherwise), wouldn't love a book filled with 150 Asian-inspired recipes you can prepare in 30 minutes or less? With a collection of delectable dishes from Afghanistan to Viet Nam, The 30-Minute Vegan's Taste of the East held the promise of accelerated culinary nirvana.
I am already a huge fan of the authors' best-selling book, The 30 Minute Vegan. So I wondered if they could they possibly outdo themselves with another collection of 30-minute recipes? As soon as I honed in on the recipe for Vanilla Cardamom Rose Lassi on page 38, I quickly realized they had.
The most enticing ingredients combine to create a romantic beverage that is intoxicatingly fragrant. I felt at ease substituting coconut milk kefir for the coconut milk yogurt suggested in this recipe, with palate-pleasing results. "Suggested" really is the key word in all of this book's wonderful recipes. In both 30-Minute Vegan books, authors Reinfeld and Murray encourage readers to experiment and have fun playing with the recipes. While many authors invite readers to create their own variations, in an almost magical way, Reinfeld and Murray truly inspire such creativity.
Like a mystery novel page-turner just waiting to be devoured, Taste of the East excited both my curiosity and my taste buds. With dishes like Tibetan Dumplings, Tempeh Vegetable Korma, and Arame Lotus Root Sauté, it was agonizingly difficult choosing the next recipe to sink my teeth into. Thoughtfully, Taste of the East is organized by country of origin, so you don't have to wait to get to the end of the book to get to the dessert recipes. Within each section, the recipes are listed in the order you'd find them on a menu, from appetizers to desserts. Each section starts with a glossary of ingredients unique to the country's cuisine, and sprinkled throughout the book are helpful boxes with Thoughtful Chef's Tips and Tricks. (What do you do if you tear your nori in the middle of making a sushi roll?) Highly useful appendixes include Preparation Basics for everything from toasting spices, nuts, and seeds to roasting tofu and tempeh.
In the spirit of sweetness, (and because I have absolutely no problem with eating dessert first), I dove straight ahead into two enticing recipes--Mango Custard Pudding from China and Black Rice Pudding from Thailand. Both desserts were decadently rich, creamy, and sweet.
After satisfying my sweet tooth, it was time to explore more serious fare. Inspired by the red lentil dal I enjoyed recently on a trip to Ananda Village, I decided to try the Indian Dhal and paired it with the recipe for Coconut Spinach Rice. True to the book's promise, once I had all of the ingredients assembled, both dishes went from stove to table in no more than thirty minutes and were as tasty as any dish it might take hours to prepare.
Next, I wanted to become reacquainted with a dish I'd only eaten once many years ago. Indonesian Gado Gado is a delightful medley of both raw and cooked vegetables served with a sassy peanut sauce dressing. Although the dish is traditionally made with cooked potatoes, I used yams instead, which together with roasted tempeh, red cabbage, green beans, carrots, cauliflower, red onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers created a vibrantly delectable fusion of flavors. The dressing blended peanut butter, coconut milk, garlic, garlic, jalapeño, maple syrup, and tamarind paste together and was the perfect accompaniment.
Before writing this review, I last tried the recipe for Sweet Soybean Sauce with Noodles, better known as Pad Siew. This simple dish, made with a soy-sauce marinade and stir-fried vegetables, is surprisingly tasty. Among the ingredients is a fish-free sauce (the recipe is in the book!) which substitutes for the traditional fish sauce used in many Thai dishes. It's an optional ingredient in this recipe, but it added a little pizazz to my Pad Siew. And I appreciate having an alternative to fish sauce on hand for all of my other Thai cooking.
Whether you want to impress your friends and family with your cooking prowess or you just enjoy eating great Asian cuisine, I highly recommend The 30 Minute Vegan's Taste of the East. This jewel of a book will inspire and delight you and awaken the creative culinary genius within you.

I own 10 low carb cookbooks (Atkins,Heller, Schwarzbein, Donna Johnson,Fran McCullough, Lauri Randolph, Gassenheimer,Doyen, Donna Rodnitzky)and this one is the best! The recipes are tasty and very well written and formatted. Some of the other books contain a lot of gourmet-ish recipes I would not normally make, others have recipes that are too boring and tasteless. The Ultimate Low Carb Diet Book gets it just right. Main Course sections include Rise and Shine (breakfast), Hot and Spicy, On the Grill, Exotic Flavors, In the Main, Strictly vegetarian. These are recipes I would chose to make even if I wasn't on a low carb diet. She also has about a dozen dessert recipes. I could not stay on the diet without this book!

I was a bit intimidated to try to cook Thai food. It just seemed like it would be so difficult! The other Thai cookbooks I've looked at seemed a little too scary- how am I supposed to shop for the ingredients if I don't know what they are? This cookbook did a GREAT job of explaining things to me- from the ingredients to the cooking methods involved. Even better, the food is AWESOME! The meals are similar to what I get at my favorite sit-down Thai restaurant. This book is well worth the money for anyone who enjoys Thai food.

The Whole-Food Guide to Overcoming Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Strategies and Recipes for Eating Well with IBS, Indigestion and Other Digestive Disorders (Whole Body Healing Series)
Average Reviews:

Digestive distress is rampant as we all steep in a post-modern toxic stew of environmental effluvia. If you, as I did, go to a gastroenterologist and are told "learn to live with the pain," Knoff's guide offers practical options for restoring your gut. A well-respected nutrition educator with a background in biochemistry, Knoff knows her stuff. The publication of her book is a great occasion, as digestive malfunction sufferers have typically had to piece much of what is covered here together (if they can) on their own.
Although a short book, The Whole Food Guide to Overcoming Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Strategies & Recipes for Eating Well with IBS, Indigestion & Other Digestive Disorders is jam packed with information and resources proven effective in reversing these debilitating disorders. For example, many health educators talk about "rotation diets" and lots of authors describe them in their books. Knoff, however, took the time to create simple-to-use, visual charts that clearly step sufferers through a rotation and challenge diet -- which is the first critical step an individual needs to take if s/he hopes to solve the mystery of the actual foods that trigger his or her specific digestive dysfunction. These charts alone are worth the price of the book.
In addition, Knoff provides background information and history, offers detailed analysis of how and why one's gut function may become compromised, and hands you recipes from soup to (soaked) nuts that will reinstate your interest in food while helping you to remove the foods that offend your body. This book can empower you to understand your affliction and guide you - or your loved one - back to full joy in eating and in life.

Knack Vegetable Cookbook: Savory Gourmet Recipes Made Easy (Knack: Make It easy)

When you think of vegetables, it's hard to get excited. For most of us eating vegetables is something we do because it's good for us. But with this cookbook I found myself looking forward to my vegetables and barely noticing the main portion of the meal. All recipes are on two pages so the book lies flat. All recipes have supporting photos and there are hints and cautions where necessary. Don't you just hate it when you get ready to put a recipe together and see a note that it has to be refrigerated or sit at room temperature for two hours? This cookbook makes those instructions plain from the get-go so there are no surprises. I've made about four or five recipes from this book already and my toughest critic (my daughter) enjoyed them. Great cookbook, nothing hoity-toity about it, and visually appealing to boot.

Organic Gardening: The Natural No-Dig Way Review

Organic Gardening: The Natural No-Dig Way
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Charles Dowding's Organic Gardening the Natural No-Dig Way is an introduction to organic gardening in general, and the 'no-dig' method in specific. The 'no-dig' method doesn't mean that absolutely no digging will take place: after all, you need to plant things in the soil and sometimes you also need to dig them up again. However, you really won't need to till or turn. Dowding believes in using raised beds composed almost entirely of rich compost, which worms naturally incorporate into the soil beneath.
Since the no-dig method is meant to be part of a larger program of organic gardening (after all, if you use industrial pesticides and the like then you'll just kill off all those worms, microorganisms, beneficial insects, and so on), much of the book details various fruits and vegetables you might plant and how best to organically raise them. It doesn't go into things such as organic pesticides and fertilizers, but instead delves entirely into physical methods of pest control.
A typical entry covers varieties, growing seasons, weeding, thinning, dressing with compost, harvest, diseases, pests, and even a simple recipe for enjoying your vegetable or fruit to the fullest. There's also a very thorough index---complete with a separate recipe index!---to help you along.
Dowding's book will definitely be of the most use in Britain and similar areas. Some of his suggestions are climate-specific, as are many of his discussions regarding varieties, and of course his planting and harvest times will be different than those elsewhere (although at least you'll get most of that information from your own seed packets or plant catalogs). Measurements and amounts are only given in units of cm and so on with no equivalents provided. Terminology differences aren't explained, and there were some cases where I wasn't sure if a bit of confusion over something the author was communicating was due to something that wasn't clear in his wording or a bit of terminology that was being used in a different manner than that to which I'm accustomed.
All in all I'd have to say that within Britain and similar areas (in terms of climate, use of measurements and terminology, availability of varieties, etc.) this book rates a 4.5 or a 5. In the US it's still highly useful for those wanting to explore the no-dig method and organic gardening at home, but it's moderately less useful---call my rating for us a 4.

Based on his experience of a system of permanent slightly-raised beds, author Charles Dowding takes you through a delicious variety of fruit and vegetables: what to choose, when to plant and harvest, and how best to avoid pests and diseases. Organic Gardening includes recipes to inspire you to culinary heights with your fresh-picked produce.Dowding shares his philosophy, tips, and techniques that have enabled him to run a successful organic garden that has supplied local restaurants and shops for 25 years. Encouraging readers to forget the rules, Dowding suggests gardeners will better understand what is going on in your soil, plants, garden, and climate when you develop your own methods of gardening. Most radically, Dowding illustrates a method for ensuring that you never need to till your soil again, instead relying upon the natural balance that comes with respecting life, spreading good compost, and allowing worms to play a key role in your maintenance.

New Vegetarian Cooking: 120 Fast, Fresh, and Fabulous Recipes
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this cookbook for a while now and have managed to make tons of the recipes, there are always more I want to try.
Some have become favorites, I often get asked for the recipe of a dish from this book that I bring to a potluck, and I have generally had great results with the recipes I've tried.
There have been a few recipes that did not turn out so well. The Thai Bean Cakes turned out being kind of like home made falafel gone wrong. They just fell apart and didn't taste that great. The sauce was time consuming to make and not too delicious.
The downside in general would be that her time estimates are a bit off, sometimes it takes hours to make a dish, others are quick (especially once you get the hang of it).
All in all I totally recommend it. It's my favorite of the 5 or so veg cookbooks I have and it had some unique, delicious, and beautiful dishes. If I'm trying to cook to impress for parties, etc. I almost always turn to this book, though there are some dishes that are easy and quick enough to be regular dinner staples too.
Fav dishes from it include: chickpea flour cakes w/ fresh salsa, niçoise salad, and mushroom & nut pate en croute

The Teen's Vegetarian Cookbook Review

The Teen's Vegetarian Cookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Teen's Vegetarian Cookbook is a wealth of recipes and tips for new vegetarians. The recipes are split into chapters by meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner - and there are also chapters for soups, desserts and college cuisine. The recipes can all be made vegan or vegetarian depending on the Teens choice. The recipes include new and different things letting teens explore Thai and Indian cuisine, but the cookbook also includes classic favorites like vegetarian egg salad and vegetarian BLT's. Interspersed throughout the recipes is information about vegetarianism and vegans and tips for teens , for example telling them to add ingredients to their parents shopping list and choose a Saturday or Sunday to make dinner for the family. The book also stresses that teens should respect others lifestyle choices and understand that not all vegetarians have the same level of commitment.
When I became a vegetarian at age 14 I ate grilled cheese sandwiches. I continued to eat grilled cheese sandwiches for the next year until I started making new friends who were vegan and vegetarian. That group of friends helped each other find recipes and cook together - but none of us ever dreamed a cool resource like this might have existed. I would have loved to have this book as a teen - and it's worth owning for adults too!

The Real Food Daily Cookbook: Really Fresh, Really Good, Really Vegetarian Review

The Real Food Daily Cookbook: Really Fresh, Really Good, Really Vegetarian
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years, concentrating on Italian cooking for the last 10 years, writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. As a very recent convert to the vegan lifestyle (94 days) I have been feverously adding books to my vegan cookbook collection. This book is the best addition to my vegan cookbook collection so far.
I love the fact that the author does not rely heavily on white sugar and wheat flour to make vegan substitutes for old favorites. I did see a few recipes with white flour, but they are definitely in the minority.
The recipe section is subdivided as follows:
Starters and small plates
Salsas, sauces and gravies
Soups
Salads and dressings
Breads and spreads
Sandwiches
Side dishes
Daily spring entrees
Daily summer entrees
Daily autumn entrees
Daily winter entrees
RFD meal
Desserts
The directions provided for the recipes are very clearly written and easy to follow. I also like the beautiful photographs of many of the finished dishes.
As a recent vegan, the food that I miss the most has to be cheese. I was thrilled to see a number of cheese recipes included in this book. The author provides recipes for cashew and tofu cheddar as well as tofu ricotta.

The Bolivian samosa recipe that does not have a pastry outer wrapper fascinates me. This recipe is more a filled potato gnocchi, but is still good. This concept opens up a lot of possibilities for additional fillings. I also appreciate that it is baked, and not fried like a traditional Indian samosa.
Having recipes for pecan pie and chocolate chip cookies makes a vegan lifestyle much more palatable. Also, I will be trying both the carrot cake and cheesecake for the next celebratory occasion.
I have one minor criticism of the book. Locating some of the more unusual ingredients is easy in a major metropolitan area, however in more rural settings this could prove to be a problem. It would have been nice if the author had provided substitutes for some of these items. Some of the more unusual ingredients that the book relies on are as follows: Agar, Kombu, Nutritional Yeast, and Umeboshi. If you don't live near a Whole Foods, or Wegman's I would confirm that you have a source for these products before picking up this book. I would suggest trying Amazon's gourmet food area. I have found some very unusual food items there.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to serve healthy meals to their family, be it everyday or just occasionally.

The 4-Ingredient Vegan Review

The 4-Ingredient Vegan

I bought this book on a recommendation from a vegan website. They raved about it but I was vastly disappointed when I realized that the recipes consisted of ingredients such as, "vegan cheddar broccoli soup" and "vegan chili" amongst others. Every recipe requires you to find a vegan store with a pre-made soup, pasta, or frozen dish. While I live in a very metropolitan area, I have NEVEr seen vegan cheddar broccoli soup, for example, and would have preferred simple recipes that didn't require pre-made, store bought ingredients.

This book is a workbook style book that helps you by providing "daily journal" with foods, etc. that you can check off during the HCG injection (or other application) diet phase 2. I was hoping for more info about how to deal with the different phases, and it certainly wasn't there. I already had a journal for the phase two diet. If you don't, this is a good buy. If you do, but need more info, which was my situation, it is not a good buy. I don't know how motivational it was... it could have covered more days and issues. Not horrible, but I am reselling it or giving it away...The HCG diet is working well for me by the way, I am using injectable HCG and have done one phase 1, a phase two (the 500 cal. diet and HCG, and am into phase 3 and will go through a second round of the phase 1 - 3 to lose the rest of the weight. I had stubborn, hormonal issues with weight, tried lots of other types of diet, including Jenny Craig which worked well for me when I was younger, but did not work the last couple of short trys I gave because of the problems that HCG deals with so very well. I have lost and maintained a loss of 20 lbs during the HCG phase, have lost a couple more in the middle period (and my weight was rising steadily due to hormonal imbalance and medications I needed to take for MS) -- I would like to lose 15-20 more lbs during the next 40 day cycle of HCG, and that is very likely. At that point, I will be at optimal weight. And at a set point which will allow me to eat many f the things I like. Another pos. is that it focuses on pure, organic if possible small portions of food, which is a great thing for everyone.
