Lidia's Italy: 140 Simple and Delicious Recipes from the Ten Places in Italy Lidia Loves Most

Without a doubt, another fine labor of love and respect of Italian cooking from our Lidia. Knowing where to begin to describe this voluminous compilation of culinary joy is difficult, in that there is much to tell. Allow me to begin with its intention.
Lidia has covered 10 regions within the cultural offerings of her beloved Italy, and while she gives the reader a gastronomic tour, her lovely daughter, Tanya, gives the historical tour, which was an excellent melting of the two grand reasons to appreciate this culture. To be sure, Tanya has a Ph.D of Renaissance history from Oxford University, and you come away with a deeper appreciation of Italy and the recipes that her mother has offered.
This rather heavy book has superb photography of prepared dishes, ingredients in the raw, spectacular views of the Italian countryside, as well as some of the charming people that she has known along the way, and along the years. Perhaps this is something of a "family" album, if you will.
The regions covered are Istria, Trieste, Friuli, Padova and Treviso, Piemonte, Maremma, Rome, Naples, Sicily, and Puglia. In beginning each regional chapter, Lidia begins with a listing of the recipes contained within, then gives her own little introduction to the territory. As she presents each recipe, she gives another small introduction that will either give a sort of educational mention, or perhaps a cooking hint. At the end of the chapter, Tanya brings it to a close with "Tanya's Tour" in which she breaks down the region with specific areas of interest and notables, and gives the reader an incredible short education of history and information.
There are 140 recipes within this tome, and they are covered within the seven categories of:
APPETIZERS
SOUPS
SALADS, SIDE DISHES, and CONDIMENTS
PASTAS AND RISOTTOS
FISH AND SEAFOOD
MEAT and POULTRY
DESSERTS
It would be a much longer review if I mentioned each specific recipe, but I believe it would suffice to say that, knowing Lidia and her passion for the true art of culinary creations, they would all be delicious. Besides, I am sure that you could find someone for each dish who would be most grateful for your labor of love, courtesy of Lidia. Having purchased all of her books, I have been most pleased to serve so many of her dishes to very happy guests, and never have I been disappointed. Lidia herself has degrees in food chemistry and such, so her fountain of knowledge is backed with science as well as love of this artform.
And to add a final note, a listing of the dishes made on her new PBS series, "Lidia's Italy", is presented at the end of the book, listing the recipes made on each show and from which region they come. You are also given her sources for some of the fine foods she uses, which include stores and websites.
As our grand dame of Italian culinary creations always tell us, "tutti a tavola per mangiare". Ciao!

100 Best Gluten-Free Recipes (100 Best Recipes) Review

100 Best Gluten-Free Recipes (100 Best Recipes)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When you cook gluten-free from scratch, it's smart to commit to a few recipe sources, because every source has its own flour blend, and it can make you crazy having to pay for, make, store, and use up, all those blends. I've tried them all, and I threw my lot in with Carol a long time ago for these reasons:
1) She pays attention to good nutrition (higher protein, lower fat, and higher fiber, without sacrificing texture, taste or appearance).
2) Her recipes are honest, sensible and reliable.
3) Everyone, GF or not, likes what I make.
4) Carol's very good at spotting trends and including the best ones in her books (who wants to be left out of yummy things like Crispy Goat Cheese Rounds?).
Mixing up her sorghum flour blend will take you back to your pre-GF days: the feel, appearance and scent are wonderful.
100 BEST GF RECIPES is compact, up-to-date, beautiful, and surefire. And, no matter how long you have been cooking and baking GF, you will always learn something new and useful reading Carol's Introductions; they're like a GF primer and refresher course in one.
I have recommended this book to the newly diagnosed, to veterans, and to those non-GF heroes who want to cook GF for their friends or family members. It's fairly priced and you won't regret it.

Saltwater Aquariums For Dummies Review

Saltwater Aquariums For Dummies

I bought this book and The New Marine Aquarium: Step-By-Step Setup & Stocking Guide by Michael S. Paletta in order to plan my new saltwater aquarium. The Paletta book is fantastic, up to date and is everything a beginner could want. The dummies book still pushes the undergravel filter as the best method for filtration. About a dozen websites that I checked dissagree. That's my major problem with this book. Having read both books over the course of two nights, I was astounded by how little information you actually get from this book. No subject is given in enough detail, even for a beginner's book. You will see my copy on ebay soon.

Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies Review

Weight Loss Surgery For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone considering weight loss surgery. It will become a valuable tool in helping you make your decision. Should you decide to have WLS, it will guide you through the numerous tests and insurance hurdles, the hospital stay, potential complications, post-op diet, and post-op emotions.
I read this book three times on my journey towards WLS. I'm now a couple of weeks post-op and continue consulting it several times a week.
One of the authors is the surgeon that Al Roker selected for his weight-loss surgery (before she had written this book). Roker wrote a short intro to the book that explains how he extensively researched WLS and interviewed eight surgeons before selecting Dr. Kurian. Roker has the money to go to any surgeon in the world, and the fact that he chose Dr. Kurian among the eight that he interviewed emphasizes Kurian's expertise in the field.
What impressed me most about this book was that the authors provided reliable and exhaustive information but didn't try to "sell" the readers on having this surgery.
Unlike most other WLS books, this one covers not only the standard Roux-en-Y and its variations but also other procedures increasingly being considered by patients, such as Lap-Band and bibliopancreatic diversion. Less common procedures are also described. After a description of each procedure, the authors provide a list of pros and cons to that procedure.
Every step of the journey towards WLS is explained in detail here, including the numerous tests the surgeon will require, getting insurance approval, the hospital stay, the post-op diet, potential complications, and psychological factors. It is truly exhaustive.

The Yoga Cookbook: Vegetarian Food for Body and Mind Review

The Yoga Cookbook: Vegetarian Food for Body and Mind

i really wanted to love this book. the pictures of the dishes throughout the book are amazing. this book does have some great info on yogic diet and fasting, but as i made a number of the dishes in this book i wondered if they really tested them out. the directions sometimes seem to leave out steps and/or ingredients, which makes it hard to follow. maybe i've just been unlucky with the recipes i've chosen over the last 6 months, but the what i've made from this book has not turned out (and i'm not a novice cook). it really is too bad that the recipes don't live up to the picture that go along with them.
