I wrote this book, an expanded, revised version of a 1986 pre-computer edition, to make it easy and fun to identify, harvest ecologically, and use the first common, edible wild plants that come up in early spring in Northeastern North America. I include detailed descriptions, so you can recognize each plant when you find it, along with lots of my original photos, drawings, and paintings that let you spot each species at various times of the year. I include info and pictures of poisonous look alikes, so you can be sure to avoid them (or not, if you're having the boss over for dinner.)
I include cooking tips and my healthful, delicious vegan recipes (also how to make home remedies from some of the plants), as well as nutritional info, history, folklore, and anecdotes, to go beyond what you'll get in a field guide, and make each species come alive and become more memorable.
I've been leading hundreds of foraging tours every year (URLs are forbidden here, but I'm easy to find online) since 1982, so I know what people need to know to be able to forage, and I've made this book user-friendly and entertaining. I also include general information about foraging, plus the story of how I was arrested and handcuffed by undercover park rangers for eating a dandelion in Central Park in 1986, and what happened afterward. I also sign each book, so if I ever eat a poisonous plant and die, the book will become even more valuable.
I'm sure you'll find this book useful and fun!
