The seeds arrived promptly after ordering them. We planted them on June 5th. I wish i could tell you the germination rate, but in our excitement to get our garden rolling after our mostly snowed out May, we didnt actually count them. However, we have close to thirty plants growing now. The majority are still relatively small in a small railing container, but a few of the bigger ones we moved into individual pots, and they are a bit larger. Still, i estimate we wont see any flowering for at least another month, so, while we might be the exception, if we arent, them you can expect these to grow more slowly than the other strains. We have quite a few others, from Cherokee Purple to Rainbow to Black Truffle that were all started at the same time, yet are no less than twice the size of the Zebras. So...be patient with them.
I've eaten quite a few of this type of tomato over the years. They are a bit firm and a bit tart, and make a great addition to Caprese Salads in my experience.
Anyway, if you are growing these, i would be interested in hearing what you have experienced as well. Undoubtedly will give me further insight.
I will continue to update this review as things develop.
August 19th: We probably ended up with 25 or so plants after we moved them from their initial railing spot. I gave away quite a few of them, but retained the ten healthiest ones. They are now easily three feet tall and flowering. A couple have the beginnings of tomatoes pushing out from the flowers. I have also noted, at least in my garden, that individual plants dont need the kind of space listed on the packages and books when you stake them. I have five growing together in one three foot pot, and they are all thriving. From what i can tell, the depth of the container is more important than the width, at least when growing in a container garden. I have done this with several different types of tomatoes this year, and all are thriving. So....just an additional tip if you love growing tomatoes, but have limited space....let a few grow together. I placed them approx 6 inches apart, although obviously, their roots entwine as they get bigger. as long as you give them a good deep watering daily (at least in the 100degree plus weather i have here in SLC), they will still thrive and be quite productive.
